Faith to Fly, Fight and Win

It takes a lot of faith to do what we do. If you are a fighter pilot, then I think it takes even a bit more. Just think of all the faith it takes to fly, fight and win.

Faith in yourself to be the best you can be. Faith in the trainers who trained you. Faith in the flight-docs who medically cleared you. Faith in the crew chiefs who supported you. Faith in the myriad of maintainers who maintained your aircraft for you. Faith in the air-battle-managers who directed you. Faith in the wingmen who had your six. Faith in the PJs dedicated to never leaving you or another Airman behind. Faith in the tanker crews who refueled you. Faith in the family, friends, and fellow Airmen who awaited your return.

All of us are surrounded with acts of faith in other people on a daily basis. But do we take the time, or make the effort, for acts of faith in God? Maybe you are none and done with God because here your faith conflicts with your reason.

* Life is a battle between faith and reason in which each feeds upon the other, drawing sustenance from it and destroying it. – Reinhold Niebuhr

* If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. – C.S. Lewis

* Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves. – Saint John Paul II

Perhaps fides et ratio, faith and reason, can be the two wings on which your human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. May you fly, fight and win to find that God is not faith versus reason. God is found in faith and reason.
